Safety first

The feeling of safety is one of the primary needs of every human being. We want to feel secure on the street, in the loft, when travelling or during organised events. Nevertheless, we care most about safety in our own houses. None of us would consciously buy a product which could put our safety in jeopardy. A roof window is a specific product, installed in the roof structure above users' heads and sometimes it happens that work has to be carried out on the roof. Hence, windows have to ensure user's safety and guard against unauthorised access to the building.

Roof windows, apart form the presented lighting and ventilating functions, have to also ensure user safety and protect against accidental falling inside the building. Seemingly imperceptible threat is in fact very serious. Statistics from the USA, where during only one year 23 people were killed falling through skylights inside the buildings, prove that the problem exists. The FAKRO Company has always set a premium on safety of its customers, introducing toughened panes as standard roof window equipment. To date however, it was difficult to officially evaluate the safety of products. At present, it is very straightforward as on 1 February 2007, there was implemented a harmonised standard for windows and doors in the whole Europe - EN 14351-1. It comprises 13049 standard which refers to roof windows making it possible to precisely define the level of safety. This standard determines 5 safety classes which characterise drop height of a 50 kg body impacting on the window.

All FAKRO roof windows achieve minimum class III safety for the whole window including glazing. The windows manufactured by the competition achieve at best class II safety.

In roofs with pitches below 30°, FAKRO recommends installation of roof windows achieving at least class III safety. A chimney sweep, roofer or aerial fitter will not fall inside in case of accidental stepping on the sash. It guarantees safety of the building usage.

Houses and apartments get broken into more often nowadays. The growing wealth of our societies is reflected in the increasingly valuable furnishings and equipment in our houses. Hence, the desire to protect one's valuable belongings is perfectly natural. The home-owners investing in anti-burglary systems securing vertical windows frequently forget about roof windows through which access to the building can also be gained. Statistics are alarming and prove that houses get broken into more often through roof windows.

In order to limit the number of burglaries where access is gained through roof topSafewindows, FAKRO has introduced an innovatory topSafe system strengthening the roof window structure.

The main features of the topSafe system are:

Roof windows manufactured in the topSafe system are characterised by increased burglary resistance. FAKRO roof windows cannot be easily opened e.g. by energetically pressing the external upper part of the window with foot. It will not result in the sash being opened or broken hinges. Lose no sleep over safety anymore knowing that your roof is equipped with the safest roof windows on the market - FAKRO roof windows not only weather-resistant but topSafe protected.
