09 February 2010
A beautiful day with clear blue skies set the scene for the Ist IFD FAKRO Ski World Cup Championship competition that took place on 6th February 2010 on the slopes of Jaworzyna Krynicka. Among 45 participants representing 7 European countries competing in a giant slalom in the men’s category the best was Grzegorz Kurek. Second place was taken by Jozef Jarkowski also from Poland. In third position was Udo Schneider from Germany. Among the women, the best was Magdalena Florek representing Poland, in second place was Karina Deakova representing Slovakia and in third place was Karin Gamma from Switzerland. In team classification, of the seven European countries taking part; Slovakia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Great Britain and Russia, Switzerland was the best with Slovakia second and Poland third.
According to the participants it was a tremendous occasion with a wonderful spirit of rivalry; everyone was impressed by the excellent organisation of the championship. The FAKRO Company rose to the challenge to prepare and organise the event. This was a first for any company to come up with the idea of gathering roofers from all over Europe to compete not only on the roof, but on the ski slopes. It was a novel idea, great fun as well and an unusual way to gather representatives from the roofing trade together.
One of the reasons FAKRO came up with the idea of the International Ski Championships for the Roofing Trade was the location; the FAKRO Enterprise is located on Nowy Sacz, a town located in the ski mountains. Secondly, for the President of FAKRO – Ryszard Florek, sking is one of his passions.
“The idea of organising an event of this kind occurred to me some years ago” said Ryszard Florek, “we have a lot of experience in organising such events. In the calendar of cyclical, professional events that are highly associated with our company we have skiing championships for construction professionals and I thought that we could extend this a little bit further and prepare the international championships with the co-operation of the International Federation for the Roofing Trade (IFD) which constitutes not only the forum of professional experience exchange but helps at the same time to consolidate the socioculture environment associated with professionals. Also each group of professionals has its own championship so why not prepare one for the roofing trade?"
The President of IFD Gordon C Penrose admits that when the President of FAKRO told him about the organisation of the event with the aim of gathering representatives of skiers associated in the Federation, he found it hard to believe at first and that such an idea would be a difficult, almost impossible challenge.
“Early in 2006 when he invited the IFD management members to Krynica, President Florek presented his idea to us” said Gordon Penrose, “it appeared a little amusing at the time and we questioned the success of such an event; we thought that it might be slightly complicated because of the logistics but this is why President Florek who is a man of success, knows how to realise his ideas therefore we were happy to help in organising such an event. All IFD FAKRO conference participants, regardless of whether they were lecturers, competitors, competitors or spectators were enthralled by the beautiful views of Sadeczczyzna, the great hospitality and the very impressive recreational facilities of FAKRO’s Activa holiday and recreational home in Muszyna. Not only was I amazed by the beautiful scenery but above all the hospitality of the organisers. The FAKRO company showed itself in a very professional way during the competition as well as the meetings organised by FAKRO”said Gordon C Penrose IFD President..
During the conference the IFD Presidential meeting took place; the committee discussed important issues regarding IFD. Discussion points included the construction market and the co-operation of the FAKRO Company. The visit to the factory was one of the highlights of the trip. Representatives of the press were invited which included Polish, Slovakian, Dutch and French journalists also representatives of IFD from Germany, Netherlands, Hungary and United Kingdom. The guests who visited the company showed great interest especially in the innovative process of production by one of the most innovative technologies.
The IFD FAKRO Ski World Cup event that took place in Southern Poland was a great success moreover; the President of FAKRO was honoured by the management of IFD when he was presented with a pin of distinction, the highest award that can be given by IFD to a partner member. Both participants and guests were already, at the invitation of FAKRO, looking forward to next year where this year’s winners can defend their titles on the slopes.
