Saddlebag Bastion – new life in the shadow of history

Originally designed in the 19th century as part of Wrocław’s fortification system, the Saddlebag Bastion has been brought back to life after many years of inactivity. This former military structure has been transformed into a vibrant cultural and recreational hub. The revitalisation process was carried out with great respect for its historical heritage, allowing the building to regain its former glory while adapting it to meet the modern needs of residents and visitors alike. A key element in this exceptional project was the use of FAKRO INNOVIEW wooden windows, which seamlessly blend with the historic architecture – both in form and in technology.

History locked in a semicircle

History locked in a semicircle Built in 1867, the Saddlebag Bastion was one of the key components of Wrocław’s fortification system. Situated along the edge of the moat, it originally served military purposes. Although it gradually lost its defensive function over the years, the structure preserved its distinctive architectural features – massive arcades, a circular courtyard, and monumental Classicist details – that have imbued the site with a unique and enduring atmosphere for decades.

The recent revitalisation of the Saddlebag Bastion sought not only to restore its structure but also to transform it into a functional, contemporary space while preserving every architectural detail. The key challenge was to integrate modern technical solutions discreetly, ensuring they remained invisible and did not compromise the authenticity or original proportions of this historic site.

INNOVIEW windows – light that respects history

For the window joinery, vertical INNOVIEW windows in the wooden IV 92 system were chosen. Not only the quality of the material was of key importance here, but also the precise manufacture of windows that allow for maintaining the historical layout of the openings and forms. Arched and tilt-and-turn windows with decorative mullion bars were used, made of pinewood in RAL 8017 colour. The interiors are complemented by the REGULAR finish variant – a simple, modern profile which blends seamlessly with classic architecture.

The wooden window structure, deliberately designed without external aluminium cladding, was chosen to maintain consistency with the building’s original character and to comply with architectural conservation requirements. Natural wood not only enhances the interior’s historic ambiance but also offers excellent thermal insulation. The IV 92 system is distinguished by its thick profile, while the advanced technology used to craft the curved elements made it possible to replicate forms that faithfully reflect the original design details.

Durability, aesthetics and authenticity

Durability, aesthetics and authenticity The advanced production technology of INNOVIEW windows enabled the precise connection of elements, with corner tenoning ensuring long-term durability and structural stability. Carefully selected glazing provides excellent insulation performance, while the four-slot sealing system and Siegenia RC1 fittings guarantee airtightness, safety, and lasting comfort. Structural mullion bars further enhance the aesthetic appeal of the joinery, recreating a composition that echoes the building’s historical design. These wooden windows not only complement the façade of the Bastion but become an integral part of it – bridging past and present and reinforcing the unique character of this historic site.

Past that inspires

The project completed at the Saddlebag Bastion demonstrates that window joinery can serve a purpose beyond mere functionality. In this case, the windows became part of the building’s narrative – telling a story of its history, transformation, and renewed role within the urban landscape. FAKRO INNOVIEW vertical windows offer a solution that harmoniously blends the timeless beauty of wood with the innovations of modern engineering, meeting even the most stringent architectural conservation requirements.
