Why Wormhouse?

The decision to build such an extraordinary house was dictated by two key factors, namely limited budget and an unusual, narrow and long building plot. The owners, looking for functional and aesthetic solutions, opted for an innovative design that not only would meet their needs, but also blend into the specific spatial conditions.

Unique design

The building’s shape resembles a caterpillar, which is a credit to the architect, who took care of every detail with great precision. Standing in front of the entrance door, you can view the house through its entire length, which gives the interior an exceptional character. Although the structure of the house is made of monolithic reinforced concrete, windows are the basic element that creates the space.

Light is where the greatest secret lies

Windows in the Wormhouse serve a variety of functions. Some are used for indoor lighting, others offer outdoor views, while the other ones are responsible for ventilation. The automatically operated DEF flat roof window brings particular attention as it acts as an opening “solar chimney”, improving air circulation in the building.

Inconspicuous square

In addition to providing natural light to the interior, the DXW flat roof window enables safe walk across its surface as it features an operational load of up to 500 kg/m². Enhanced load capacity and non-slip glass make the DXW model a perfect solution for terraces and flat roofs where safety is crucial aspect. The unique design of this window enables it to be installed completely flush within the roofline to result in homogeneous and aesthetic surface. Moreover, the light coming through this large-sized window has become the focal point of the kitchen, giving it a special character.

Zero waste approach

The Wormhouse is also distinguished by the zero waste philosophy used in the construction process. The membrane that surrounds the house acts as an insulation. Special “ribs” were applied inside it to allow free air flow. To reduce their weight, holes were cut in them, from which the material for the suspended bed in the bedroom was obtained.

Example of innovative architecture

The Wormhouse in Zabłocie is an example of how low-budget solutions can be combined with high-quality design. Its unusual appearance and functionality inspire architects and investors around the world, showing that something exceptional can be created even with limited resources.
