FAKRO’s Gruwelijkste successful with high proceeds

On July 9, 2016, FAKRO Netherlands and ROAd4energy competed against mitochondrial disease by raising as much money as possible during the first edition of the cycling event ‘FAKRO’s Gruwelijkste’. And with success! About 300 enthusiastic cyclists entered the event to cycle in the absolutely beautiful surroundings of Groesbeek. With the efforts of all participants, volunteers and donors the event raised a fantastic amount of €13.465,- for charity.

Proceeds for ROAd4energy
The total proceeds go to the charity ROAd4energy. Funds are used for a research of medicine against mitochondrial disease. With the lustrum edition of the really popular mountain bike tour ‘Groesbeeks Gruwelijkste’ coming up, the charity has delivered a valuable contribution to the medicine research during its very short existence. The proceeds of ‘FAKRO’s Gruwelijkste’ will bring this goal even closer.

The cycling tour
The cyclists took on the steep hills of Groesbeek and surroundings during two routes: 80 km and 125 km. Both routes took them along a magnificent area of Limburg, Ubbergen, Bergen Dal, Nijmegen and of course Groesbeek. The longer route also went through the territory of Germany. All the cyclists got the chance to climb the famous ‘Oude Holleweg’ in Ubbergen. This climb gives the name FAKRO’s Gruwelijkste (loosely translated as toughest) an extra meaning with its average increase value of 7.4%. Only for the toughest! After this achievement everybody got the chance to rest in a very special spot: Sint Maartenskliniek (hospital). Robbe Alsemgeest (a son of two founders of the charity) was treated here five years ago in his battle against Leigh disease. A special place to take a moment and dwell on it. As a reward for all the efforts everybody received a goodie bag and pasta meal upon arrival at the finish. And they truly deserved it for a such great achievement.

Next edition
Because of the success of the 2016 edition FAKRO Netherlands will organize a second edition in 2017. All developments can be followed on www.fakro.nl/gruwelijkste. See you next year!
