Thanks to the applied solutions, once you enter the building, you do not want to leave it anymore. The modern facility provides students with an inspiring space for development, while the University employees with enviable, functional and comfortable place to work.

Completed in 2017, the building of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia in Katowice is a modern structure characterised by a unique style. Designers managed to effectively fill the empty urban space in an attractive way and make the learning process more pleasant for those who benefit from it. A number of FAKRO products have been installed in the facility. Construction plans were developed within the framework of cooperation of three architectural offices: Małeccy Design Studio from Katowice, Group 5 Architects from Warsaw and BAAS Arquitectura from Barcelona. The building of the Faculty of Radio and Television is distinguished by its prestigious appearance, and at the same time it perfectly blends with the surrounding buildings of Katowice city centre.

FAKRO windows illuminate the space of development

The facility with a usable area of 4806m2, and situated at 3 Świętego Pawła St., complements in a very aesthetic manner the previously undeveloped square.

Arrangement of the building plot constituted a real challenge for architects as they had to incorporate a new structure into very dense network of surrounding buildings. What is more, there was already a historic building on the plot, therefore a new part of the facility has been integrated with it. The outcome is that the whole structure of the building of the Faculty of Radio and Television retains the character of the old architecture of Katowice city centre. The openwork finish of the façade made of ceramic blocks is an eye-catching element at the front of the building. This façade design is inspired by solutions used in the construction industry on the Iberian Peninsula, but adapted to the realities of the Polish temperate climate zone. In order to be consistent with the external side of the building, internal walls are largely made of dark, bare brick.

Solutions that create a unique atmosphere

Glazing is a very important element of the new building. Adequate interior lighting ensures better display of tastefully finished internal walls. A total of 66 roof windows with insulation sets also serve a number of practical functions. This large amount of windows provides not only a view of the inner courtyard and contact with the world around us, but also invites

this world inside and fills it with natural light. Additional comfort is ensured by the soundproof performance of FAKRO windows, thanks to which noise from the street does not penetrate into rooms. Pleasant spending of time inside is also secured by high insulation efficiency of these windows.

Appreciated beauty and functionality

Awarding the first place in the competition for the new seat of the Faculty of Radio and Television of the University of Silesia was not only the expression of appreciation for the presented design. Its well-thought realization has been recognized with prestigious awards. One of them is Grand Prix of the Year Award given by the Association of Polish Architects whose patron is FAKRO.
